US authorities have arrested an Indian-origin man Mehul Goswami of Latham, New York, who is accused of working a second job in the town of Malta, on charges of “grand larceny” following an investigation by the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office last week.

Goswami, 39, was employed by the New York State Office of Information Technology Services and he was allegedly simultaneously working in another job in Malta, investigators have said, accusing Goswami that his actions led to a theft of more than $50,000 in state funds.

The investigation was carried out in a joint effort by the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Inspector General’s Office.

New York State Inspector General Lucy Lang, in a statement said, “Public employees are entrusted with the responsibility to serve with integrity, and Mr. Goswami’s alleged conduct represents a serious breach of that trust.”

Criticising Goswami’s actions of working in two jobs, Lang further added, “Working a second, full-time job while claiming to be working for the State is an abuse of public resources, including taxpayer dollars.”

Goswami was arrested on October 15 on the charges of grand larceny in the second degree, which is a class C felony. He was arraigned in the Malta Town Court before Judge James A. Fauci and released on his own recognizance, CBS 6 reported.

Under the updated New York state law, charges pressed against Goswami are not considered a qualifying offence for bail.

“We truly value the relationships we have with our law enforcement partners. This is a perfect example of the power of collaboration and we look forward to this case’s successful resolution in court,” Sheriff Michael Zurlo, according to CBS 6.
