A young Indian expatriate from Kerala has died in the UAE after a wall at a building under construction collapsed during torrential rain and strong winds in Ras Al Khaimah, reported Gulf News.

The victim has been identified as Salman Fariz, 27, who hailed from Malappuram district in Kerala, according to people familiar with the case.

Salman was employed as a delivery worker at a cafeteria in the Nakheel area of Ras Al Khaimah. He died around 3 AM on Thursday after a wall under construction fell on him while he was out delivering an order, his employers and a social worker told Gulf News.

Caught in severe weather

KK Mohammed and Abdul Shukoor, who run the 24-hour cafeteria where Salman worked, said the accident happened after sudden heavy rain and strong winds swept the area.

“After some time, heavy downpour and high winds started and he called us saying his motorbike had stopped midway,” Mohammed said. “We told him not to worry about the vehicle and to take shelter somewhere.”

It is believed that Salman took shelter either inside or close to a building that was still under construction. “The wall under construction collapsed on him, leading to his death,” Shukoor said.

The employers said that two staff members went out looking for Salman when he failed to return, but they were unable to locate him. “We came to know about the tragedy only when the police informed us,” Mohammed said.

“We are all shocked and deeply saddened. He is gone too soon,” Shukoor added.

Abdul Nasar, a social worker assisting the family, said arrangements were being made to repatriate Salman’s body to India.

“The mortal remains will be sent to his hometown after completion of the legal procedures,” Nasar said. “We are coordinating with the authorities.”
