WhatsApp has introduced a slew of features to make group chats more organised, expressive, and harder to ignore when it matters. Considering most users rely on group messages to plan events, manage communities, and stay connected across devices, the popular instant messaging platform is now refining how users interact in shared spaces.
The most notable new addition is member tags that have been designed to add clarity to busy group chats. With this, users can now assign themselves custom labels describing their roles within a specific group. For example, a user may appear as “Anna’s Dad” in a school group, “Treasurer” in a housing society chat, or “Goalkeeper” in a weekend football group. It needs to be noted that these tags are group-specific, meaning users can use different identities across different conversations. WhatsApp said that the feature will roll out gradually to users worldwide.
Meanwhile, another update focuses on self-expression. Text stickers feature lets users convert any word or phrase into a sticker by simply typing it into Sticker Search. Most importantly, the newly created text stickers can now be saved directly to a user’s sticker pack without needing to send them in a chat first. This makes it easier to reuse custom expressions without relying solely on emojis or GIFs.
Group planning is also getting a practical upgrade. With custom event reminders, users can now set early notifications when creating events inside group chats. This intends to reduce missed calls, late arrivals, or forgotten plans, whether the event is an in-person gathering or a virtual meeting. Invitees will receive reminders ahead of time, helping groups coordinate more efficiently.
These updates build on a growing list of group-focused features that WhatsApp has introduced in recent years. Existing capabilities include sharing large files of up to 2GB, sending HD photos and videos, screen sharing during calls, and using voice chats for real-time discussions without initiating a formal call.
According to WhatsApp, these updates are part of its broader effort to offer what it considers the best group chat experience across platforms and devices. With group conversations becoming integral to personal and professional communication, the platform appears to be focused on reducing friction, improving clarity, and giving users more control.
