According to a new report by Android Authoritythe company is working on a feature that would allow Gemini to process certain requests in the background, making interactions smoother and more seamless. Currently, the Gemini overlay can be triggered by either using the Google hotword or long pressing on the power button, but it disappears as soon as you tap on the background.

This means users have to start their interactions with the AI chatbot from scratch every time they close it, making it impossible to toggle between Gemini and another app. But on the latest beta version of the Google app, it looks like the tech giant has found a way to make the Gemini overlay work with other apps.

While none of these changes have made it to the user, the publication said it was able to get a sneak peek at the new interface that lets users navigate away from the Gemini overlay without losing what they were doing in the background.

As you can see in the video embedded above, when users ask Gemini using the overlay, they will be able to jump back to the app behind with the AI chatbot doing its processing in the background. The results can then be checked by pressing on the floating button that appears.

This is really useful when users want to check something using Gemini without having to worry about the AI chatbot’s overlay disappearing all of a sudden. However, since the functionality is still in early stages, it may take a while before Google rolls it out for everyone.
