Gul Panag points out ‘real issue’ of airline safety and pilot fatigue has been pushed to the back burner amid Indigo fiasco: ‘Narrative of chaos’ | Bollywood News

It’s a lesser known fact that actor Gul Panag is also a certified private pilot. She obtained her Private Pilot’s License in 2016 after training at Chimes Aviation Academy in Madhya Pradesh. An even lesser known fact is that her husband Rishi Attari is a commercial pilot, and currently works at the Indigo airline, as per his LinkedIn profile.

Hence, amid the ongoing fiasco of Indigo cancelling hundreds of flights over its inability to comply to the new FDTL (Flight Duty Time Limits) rules, Gul took to X to lend her support to the airline. “While empathy for the pressure on crew and operations during this regulatory transition is essential , a NARRATIVE of chaos should NOT overshadow the intent behind the updated fatigue and safety norms — which ultimately exist to protect both passengers and crew,” she wrote.

“Operational challenges during a change of this scale are real, and @IndiGo6E’s situation reflects the complexity of implementing such reforms across a large network. Wishing them strength, clarity & integrity-as they navigate this transition,” she added. Gul also tagged Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), and the Ministry of Civil Aviation in her tweet.

Amid the ongoing large-scale cancellation of flights, the DGCA allowed Indigo some temporary relaxations with regards to the updated FDTL rules till February 10 in order for the airline to strengthen its operations till then. After this development, Gul Panag added to her tweet by writing, “Interesting how the narrative has been moved from safety and fatigue – to chaos, refunds and high fares.”

“The real issue — updated FDTL norms designed to protect lives — has been pushed to the back burner. We’ll know in February now if the ‘abeyance’ will continue further (shrug emoji),” the actor added, also tagging the Ministry of Civil Aviation in her tweet. When an X user flagged how Indigo’s actions have burnt a hole in the pockets of thousands of passengers, Gul responded with a sad emoji in the comment section.

Meanwhile, the DGCA on Saturday issued show cause notices to IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers and Accountable Manager Isidro Porqueras seeking explanations within 24 hours on the massive flight disruptions. For five days in a row, IndiGo has witnessed significant operational disruptions with hundreds of flight cancellations and delays, causing hardships to thousands of passengers.

In the notices sent to Elbers and Porqueras, the regulator said the large-scale operational failures indicate significant lapses in planning, oversight and resource management. “As the CEO, you are responsible for ensuring effective management of the airline, but you have failed in your duty to ensure timely arrangements for conduct of reliable operations and the availability of requisite facilities to the passengers,” the regulator said.
