Aashiqui actor Rahul Roy has had quite a career graph. After breaking out as the leading man of Mahesh Bhatt’s 1990 seminal musical romance Aashiqui, Rahul became one of the most sought-after actors in Hindi cinema. However, he could never replicate the success of his breakthrough movie. Years later, he bounced back by winning the inaugural season of popular reality show Bigg Boss in 2007.

However, after he suffered a brain stroke in 2020, Rahul’s career got derailed again. Recently, he played a supporting role in Kanu Behl’s critically acclaimed indie Agra, which released in very limited cinemas earlier this month. Now, a video of Rahul playing the guitar and lip-synching to the iconic Aashiqui title track on the stage at a wedding in Bikramganj, Bihar has gone viral.

In the video, it can be seen that Rahul Roy has recreated his look from Aashiqui, wearing a black suit and sporting long hair. Hosts of the wedding stand behind him and ask the guests to cheer for Rahul and sing along. In the middle of the performance, Rahul even gets up and greets some of the guests from the stage, before resuming his performance.

The viral video polarized the internet. A section was disappointed that Rahul has to now perform at weddings to sustain his livelihood. “Some artists rise. Some… dissolve. Fame exposes character,” wrote an X user. “Funny, but also a reminder that fame is temporary and some people struggle to stay in the limelight they once had,” commented another. “Feeling bad for him. Once a star and a winner of Big Boss season 1,” read a third comment.

However, another section of the internet came to Rahul’s defence. “I see a man talented enough to still get paid for his skills. I see a man humble enough to not judge an opportunity by its size. I see a man. What do you see?,” commented a user. “He is doing what he knows best to survive in life. Not everyone can be a SRK or Ranveer to dance in High profile marriages,” wrote another user, referring to the recent performances of Shah Rukh Khan and Ranveer Singh at the high-profile Udaipur wedding of billionaire Rama Raju Mantena’s daughter.

“Unlike other sport or occupations, post retirement there is still residual income. Plus it feels good to still have fans for your past block buster work. Would happily embrace it. Been a part of the industry in the past,” reasoned a third user. Some users even hilariously compared Rahul’s recreated Aashiqui look to that of popular Hollywood characters like Keanu Reeves’ assassin John Wick and Severus Snape from the Harry Potter franchise. “Severus Snape at Lily Porter’s wedding,” commented a user.
