As Tiger Shroff’s Baaghi 4 falls behind Conjuring Last Rites despite BOGO offer, Sanjay Gupta takes a dig: ‘Could never imagine…’ | Bollywood News

Tiger Shroff’s latest action-packed offering, Baaghi 4, hit theatres on Saturday, but its box office performance has been quite mediocre. The film opened to earnings of Rs 12 crore on its first daya figure that not only fails to match the previous two films in the franchise but also falls significantly behind Hollywood film The Conjuring Last Rites which released on the same day. Conjuring Last Rites made Rs 18 crore at the domestic box office on the same day. The stark difference has sparked criticism within the industry, most notably from veteran filmmaker Sanjay Gupta.

Taking to X, Gupta expressed his disappointment, writing: “Me in my 20’s/30’s could never imagine an English film outperforming a Hindi film. Today’s reality – An English horror film does double the business of a main stream Hindi action film. What changed???”

His comments came just a day after he had taken a dig at both lead actor Tiger Shroff and producer Sajid Nadiadwala for resorting to a ‘Buy One Get One’ (BOGO) offer in an attempt to boost footfalls on opening day. To draw in more viewers, the makers of Baaghi 4 had partnered with a ticket booking app to offer a 50% discount (up to Rs 150) on two tickets.

What makes Gupta’s criticism sting further is when you take the screen count in consideration. According to Cineinfinity, Baaghi 4 released across 2,970 screens, while The Conjuring: Last Rites opened in just 2,140. Despite the wider release and discount offers, the Hollywood horror film outperformed Baaghi 4 by a significant margin. While trade expectations for Baaghi 4 were modest, largely in single digits, the Rs 12 crore debut does offer a sliver of hope for Tiger Shroff, whose recent releases have struggled at the box office. However, the road ahead remains steep, especially with The Conjuring Last Rites debuting with a strong traction even on a weekday.
