Anupam Kher cries recalling his struggle; Feroz Abbas Khan calls him ‘finest living actor’: ‘You want a witness to your truth’ | Bollywood News

Before becoming one of the most recognized faces of Hindi cinema, Anupam Kher went through his share of struggles. The actor narrated his journey in his 2014 play Kucch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai, directed by Feroz Abbas Khan. During his recent chat at the latest edition of Expresso, Anupam had tears in his eyes as Feroz reflected on his extraordinary journey in the film industry. Speaking about closely observing Anupam’s careerFeroz said, “He is perhaps the finest living actors we have in this country. This actor has done from sublime to ridiculous and he has made sublime extremely memorable and made ridiculous believable. That kind of skill very few actors have.”

He went on to add, “When he was at the top of his game, he came to me and said that I want to reinvent myself. I want to get back to theatre and I want to feel the possibility of failure because it is only with that can you invent yourself. Later, he came to me when he was in his worst condition. He had flopped as a director and he told me he has nowhere to go. And I felt the greatest joy of working with him only at his top and his lowest phase of life and that’s why I kept the play’s tag line — he will do anything to succeed, even fail.”

Hearing Feroz’s words, Anupam couldn’t hold back his emotions. With tears streaming down his eyes, he said, “Ahh… you have ruined everything. You have not appreciated me like this ever. You made me cry.” When asked why he got emotional, Anupam responded, “You want a witness to your truth, and he became a witness of my truth.”

Anupam Kher made his debut in films with Mahesh Bhatt’s critically acclaimed Saaransh. At just 25 years old, he portrayed the role of a 65-year-old man. Despite facing several rejections because of his bald look, he eventually created a niche for himself in cinema. Over the years, he appeared in more than 540 films and 100 plays, with notable works including Saaransh, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Karma, Khosla Ka Ghosla, A Wednesday, The Kashmir Files, The Accidental Prime Minister and many more. He was last seen in Metro In Dino and Tanvi the Great, the latter of which he also directed.
