Tripura Civil Society to hold 12-hr statewide strike on Oct 13 over ‘non-implementation’ of Tiprasa Accord, other demands | India News

The Agartala-based Tripura Civil Society (TCS) has called for a 12-hour strike across the state on October 13, demanding the implementation of the Tiprasa Accord and strong measures to detect illegal migrants.

Official recognition for the Roman script for Kokborok, and detection of fake Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe certificates are among the other prominent demands.

TCS announced that the strike would be held from 6 am to 6 pm. Essential services, including railways, air traffic, postal vehicles, milk supply, ambulances, fire services, petroleum, and pharmacies, among others, have been exempted from the strike.

Announcing the strike at a press conference in MLA hostel, TIPRA Motha legislator Ranjit Debbarma, who is also leading TCS, alleged that the state government failed to follow the directives of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs about identifying, detecting, and deporting illegal migrants in the state.

“Assam and other northeastern states have set up detention camps, but Tripura has not adopted any such measures till now,” said Debbarma.

The group also termed the state government’s move to set up a Special Task Force (STF) to identify and deport illegal migrants as an eyewash. The STF was formed in July.

Debbarma further demanded the implementation of an Inner Line Permit in the state, claiming it would act as a safeguard against illegal immigration.

Earlier on July 13, Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore demanded that a Bihar-style Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls be carried out in Tripura and the entire Northeast to detect illegal immigrants.
