‘This is how democracy should work’: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Mamdani–Trump meet | India News


Congress MP Shashi Tharoor reacted to the meeting between New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office on November 21.

Sharing a post on X, Tharoor wrote, “This is how democracy should work. Fight passionately for your point of view in elections, with no rhetorical holds barred. But once it’s over and the people have spoken, learn to cooperate with each other in the common interests of the nation you are both pledged to serve.”

Taking a swipe at India’s current political atmosphere, he added, “I would love to see more of this in India — and am trying to do my part.”

This comes after Tharoor has faced recent criticism within the Congress for praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Ramnath Goenka Lecture, with party leaders questioning why he remains in the Congress if he believes the BJP’s strategies are more effective.

Mamdani-Trump Meeting

US President Donald Trump hosted New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House on Friday. The two New Yorkers, representing vastly different political ideologies, appeared friendly and cheerful.

The 79-year-old Republican president, who had previously criticised Mamdani with terms like “100 per cent Communist Lunatic,” welcomed the 34-year-old democratic socialist warmly. Trump referred to him as “Mr Mayor,” praised his electoral victory, and expressed optimism about his upcoming tenure.

Both leaders focused on economic issues, particularly housing and the cost of groceries, key concerns in Mamdani’s mayoral campaign. “Some of his ideas are the same ideas I have,” Trump said, while Mamdani talked about outreach to Trump supporters concerned about everyday expenses. Their conversation steered clear of more divisive topics such as immigration and the war in Gaza.
