Earlier this year, a frightening incident unfolded at Saif Ali Khan’s residence when an intruder broke into the house. The situation escalated when the actor confronted the intruder, leading to a violent struggle in which Saif sustained multiple injuries, including wounds to his neck and spine. Fortunately, he survived and made a swift recovery. Now, Saif has opened up about surviving the knife attack in a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India.
Reflecting on how close the incident came to altering his life permanently, he said, “I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to have gotten away with it the way I did, because it was very close. There was a nick to my spinal cord, and that could have led to paralysis, because I had lost feeling in my leg for a while. And that concept of being bedridden forever, or being paralysed, is frightening, and still frightens me. So I don’t know if that means I’ve changed, but I’m appreciative that I am healthy, and that keeps me grateful.” He further added that he has always viewed his life as a privilege, a belief that the incident may have only reinforced.
“I’ve always kind of been grateful, and I know that every day is a blessing. This might have accentuated it slightly,” he said and added, “I think I’ve always lived a certain way, knowing that it is a privilege, and that we’re very lucky to even go through life the way we do.”

Maintaining his trademark wit even while addressing the harrowing experience, Saif remarked, “And yeah, I get the feeling I have kind of nine lives. Having said this, I might be gone tomorrow, and then you can say, ‘Oh my God, he just said nine lives.’ But I’ve been very close very often.” He added that the incident was “quite close, and scary.”
Previously, during an appearance on the Twinkle Khanna and Kajol–hosted chat show Two Much, the actor had recounted the terrifying sequence of events from that night. “Kareena had been out (the previous night), and I had just finished watching a movie with the boys (his children Taimur and Jeh). So, we went to sleep quite late, around two in the morning. After Kareena returned, we had a small chat before we turned in. Then, the maid came in and she said, 'Who is there in father's room? He has a knife in his hand and is saying that he needs money. (There’s someone in Jeh’s room. He has a knife in his hand, and he says he wants money).”
He went on to describe how he reacted instinctively upon hearing the warning. “I kind of heard that and rolled out of bed. I barged into Jeh’s room in the dark and I saw this guy standing over his bed with a knife. I tried to remember my training and blocked a couple of them. But then I felt a thump in my back that was really hard. By then, everyone was out of their rooms. Gita, our domestic help, aided me in this struggle and pushed the guy off me. She saved my life at that point because he had cut me everywhere. Then we locked him in a room.”
