Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called the Bondi Beach shooting on Sunday a “targeted attack” on Australians where at least 12 people have been killed and one of the gunmen was neutralised, while the second suspect is in critical condition. Albanese told reporters in Canberra that he was “devastated” by the massacre, AP reported.

The Australian prime minister said the Sydney shooting occurred on a day which should have been a “day of joy” as more than 1,000 people had gathered at a Jewish event. “An act of evil antisemitism, terrorism that has struck the heart of our nation,” Albanese said during a news briefing. He added that there’s no place for this “vile act of violence and hate.”

In a detailed statement, PM Albanese said, “This is a targeted attack on Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah, which should be a day of joy, a celebration of faith, an act of evil, antisemitism, terrorism that has struck the heart of our nation. There is no place for this hate, violence and terrorism in our nation.”

The Australian prime minister further promised to “eradicate it amidst this vile act of violence and hate will emerge a moment of national unity where Australians across the board will embrace their fellow Australians of Jewish faith. The evil that was unleashed at Bondi Beach today is beyond comprehension, and the trauma and loss that families are dealing with tonight is beyond anyone’s worst nightmare.”

Providing an update on the investigation being carried out, Albanese said authorities have been working to identify who all have been involved in the attack.

French President Emmanuel Macron also reacted to the mass shooting in Sydney and in a post on X said, “France extends its thoughts to the victims, the injured and their loved ones. We share the pain of the Australian people and will continue to fight relentlessly against antisemitic hatred, which hurts us all, wherever it strikes.”

Thousands had gathered at the Bondi Beach called Chanukah by the Sea for the Jewish event which was celebrating the start of Hanukkah Jewish festival, where two gunmen targeted the Jewish community and killed 12 people, with 29 taken to hospital, including a child.
