US President Donald Trump took a Dig at New York City's Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdannireferring to him as “whatever the hell his name is” during an address at the America Business Forum in Miami, Florida, on Wednesday, PTI reported. His remarks came a day after Mamdani, an Indian-origin Democratic socialist, made history as New York’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor following the November 4 elections.

Trump claimed that the results showed Americans were now facing a “choice between communism and common sense,” PTI reported. He alleged that Democrats had installed “a communist” in the country’s largest city and warned, “You watch what happens in New York, terrible… I hope it doesn’t happen, but you’re going to see it.”

Communism vs common sense

The president said that while Americans had “restored their sovereignty” by re-electing him last year, the New York mayoral race had meant they “lost a little bit” of it. He reiterated his warning that Mamdani’s victory could bring a “complete and total economic and social disaster” to the city.

“If you want to see what Congressional Democrats wish to do to America, just look at the result of yesterday’s election in New York,” Trump said, according to PTIadding that the Democratic Party had “installed a communist as the mayor.” He continued, “We have a choice between communism and common sense… It’s common sense or communism.”

Trump also mocked Mamdani’s stance on gender inclusion in sports, saying, “…and Mandami, whatever the hell his name is in New York… thinks it’s wonderful to have men playing in women’s sports,” drawing boos from the crowd. He went on to accuse Democrats of steering the US toward “communist Cuba” and “socialist Venezuela,” adding that Miami could become a refuge for those fleeing New York.

Mamdani's win

Despite his criticism, Trump maintained his affection for his hometown, saying, “I love New York… we had the telltale signs of trouble because we had a guy named de Blasio,” referring to the former Democratic mayor.

In his victory speech, Mamdani, a long-time critic of Trump, hailed his election as a triumph for immigrants. “New York will remain a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants, and, as of tonight, led by an immigrant,” he said to loud applause.

Addressing Trump directly, Mamdani added, “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up. To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us.”
