Amid India-US tariff tensions, PM Modi hails Trump’s peace plan for Gaza | India News

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday hailed US President Donald Trump’s peace plan to end the conflict in Gaza. The 20-point peace plan proposes immediate ceasefire in the war-torn region.

In a post on X, PM Modi said: “We welcome President Donald J. Trump’s announcement of a comprehensive plan to end the Gaza conflict. It provides a viable pathway to long term and sustainable peace, security and development for the Palestinian and Israeli people, as also for the larger West Asian region. We hope that all concerned will come together behind President Trump’s initiative and support this effort to end conflict and secure peace.”

PM Modi’s praise for Trump came after US administration imposed hefty tariffs on Indian imports once again. While Trump has called Modi his “good friend”, he has refused to back down on his tariff demands.

The US President went as far as to call India a “dead economy”, while his Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick recently said that India (and Brazil) needs to be “fixed” by the US.

What is Trump’s peace proposal?

Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday announced a new peace proposal for Gaza, urging Hamas to agree or face further military action.

Under Trump’s peace plan, Hamas and Israel would have to immediately cease all hostilities and the former would need to release 20 Israeli hostages alive and hand over the remains of more than two dozen believed dead within 72 hours. In return, Israel would free hundreds of Palestinians currently in detention.

Hamas to abdicate Gaza

As per sources British broadcaster BBC spoke to, Washington sent the 20-point proposal to Hamas. The plan specifies that Hamas would be excluded from any future role in governing Gaza, while leaving open the prospect of an eventual Palestinian state.

At a White House press briefing, Trump described the deal as “a historic day for peace”, but warned that the US would back Israel in “finishing the job of eliminating Hamas” if the group rejects the terms. Netanyahu reinforced that message, saying Israel “will finish the job” if Hamas refuses or fails to comply.

It highlights a major “economic development plan” to rebuild Gaza, stating Israel will neither annex nor permanently occupy the territory. Unlike earlier proposals, it assures Palestinians they will not be forced to leave Gaza, instead promising opportunities to “stay and build a better future.”

The plan came shortly after Netanyahu condemned Western recognition of a Palestinian state during a fiery speech at the UN, branding such moves a “mark of shame”. Many delegates walked out during his address.

The Palestinian Authority, which administers the West Bank, welcomed Trump’s plan as “sincere and determined”. In a statement carried by Palestine’s WAFA news agency, it reaffirmed its readiness to work with the US, regional powers, and international partners to halt the war, ensure humanitarian aid reaches Gaza, and secure the release of hostages and prisoners.
