Meta rolls out Message translation for WhatsApp Messenger | Technology News

WhatsApp on Thursday, September 24, introduced a new feature that allows users to live translate messages, enabling communication across languages. Considering billions  of people are using WhatsApp, the feature aims to overcome the language and cultural barriers.

If a user receives a message in a different language, all they need to do is long-press on the message and click on ‘Translate’ from the drop-down menu. Users will also get an additional option to save the translated message. This new feature is available for Group chats, personal chats and channel updates.

Additionally, Android users will get the option to enable automatic translation for a whole chat thread, which will translate all incoming messages in that discussion as the messaging goes along. WhatsApp claims that the purpose of message translations is to safeguard the confidentiality of your conversations. This means the translations that take place on your device remain private.

WhatsApp is progressively rolling out message translations to Android and iPhone users in a few select languages.  They will also add more languages over time.  The translate feature is currently offering English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic for Android users. On the other hand, the feature will launch in more than 19 languages for iPhone users in the future.

In August, WhatsApp also launched a new AI feature called Writing Help that enables users to edit, rewrite, or modify the tone of their conversations. Before sending a message to someone else, this new function will help users correct grammar, phrase their messages correctly, and even change the tone, if needed.

Users of Writing Help can receive AI-generated recommendations that reword their communications in a way that is more professional, humorous, encouraging, and more.
