Apple gearing up for foldable iPhones? What we know so far | Technology News

Apple’s new devices that will roll out next year might also feature a new foldable phone, and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also says that it would be “two titanium iPhone Airs side-by-side”.

Gurman also said in his most recent publications that Apple’s first foldable gadget will be “super thin and a design achievement”. Combining modern folding technology with Apple’s compact iPhone design factor will be a great innovation; nonetheless, a premium price tag of at least $2,000 is still anticipated for this device.

According to rumours, Apple is set to release its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Fold, next year. According to industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the foldable iPhone is expected to cost between $2,000 and $2,500 and feature a 7.8-inch internal display and a 5.5-inch external screen. The inner screen size is similar to the iPad mini, while the outer one is similar to the older iPhone mini.

The phone is also rumoured to have a crease-free “book fold” design, measuring between 9 and 9.5 mm thick when folded and 4.5 and 4.8 mm thick when unfolded.

The iPhone Fold is said to feature a total of four cameras: two on the rear and one on each of the front displays (folded and unfolded). Both rear cameras are rumoured to be 48MP, though it is not yet clear if the second lens will be an ultra-wide or telephoto.

For security, the phone might use Touch ID instead of Face ID, with the sensor built into the side button, similar to the iPad Air. This could be due to space constraints, avoiding the need for two separate Face ID components.

The device is also expected to have a titanium design, including its hinge and casing, which is a material recently used in the iPhone Air. The combination of these features suggests that the new foldable phone will be similar to two iPhone Airs side by side, but even thinner.

According to reports, Apple intends to eliminate Face ID in favour of Touch ID built into the side button to maximise interior space. It is anticipated that the titanium gadget will include a dual-lens rear camera and a front-facing camera that can be folded or unfolded.

The foldable iPhone will compete in an increasingly crowded market dominated by Samsung’s Galaxy Z series, marking Apple’s late entry into the folding smartphone category after years of development rumours for the device.

Previously this month, Apple unveiled the new thin iPhone Air alongside the iPhone 17 series. Although it still falls short of the M4 iPad Pro’s remarkable thinness of 5.3 mm, the gadget measures 5.64 mm in thickness and is the company’s smallest iPhone to date. This shows Apple’s efforts to move towards a foldable display.
