Trainee doctor held for ‘rape’ of foreign national at Goa private hospital


Police Thursday arrested a medical trainee doctor for allegedly raping a 24-year-old foreign national, who had been admitted for treatment at a private hospital in Goa.

The woman, a Moroccan national, was admitted for a neurological disorder at the hospital on August 29. Police said the FIR was lodged Wednesday evening after the survivor’s sister lodged a police complaint. According to the complaint, the incident took place on August 31 around 10 pm when the foreign national was undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit ward. The complaint alleged that the accused doctor “lifted her gown and groped her breast” under the pretext of conducting a test. The complaint states that the accused “forcefully grabbed her buttocks” and “placed his fingers on her private area while she was immobile and in vulnerable condition.”

The complaint states the accused pressed his fingers in her private parts on the pretext of conducting a neurological sensitivity examination. According to the complaint, the accused allegedly further told the survivor “this is the procedure every evening moving forward”.

In a statement, the private hospital said the accused Diplomate of National Board (DNB) student was “promptly suspended from active duties pending further police inquiry” upon receiving the complaint from the victim.

“The victim was assured all support by the hospital authorities in her complaint to the police regarding the offence. The victim continues to undergo treatment at the hospital. The hospital will continue to provide all moral and logistic support to the victim during her ordeal,” the statement said.

Police said the accused, 28, a native of Maharashtra, left Goa after the incident and was traced from Solapur-Sangli area Thursday evening and placed under arrest.

An FIR was registered under sections 64 (2) (e) (j) (rape), 74 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 75 (sexual harassment), 76 (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe) and 79 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
