Vir Das and Kavi Shastri’s directorial debut and upcoming action comedy Happy Patel has gotten the internet’s attention for multiple reasons. One of them being Imran Khan’s cameo in the movie, as he’s all set to make his return to the big screen a decade after Nikkhil Advani’s 2015 romantic comedy Katti Batti.
Happy Patel is produced by Imran’s uncle Aamir Khan’s banner, which had also launched him as an actor in Abbas Tyrewala’s 2008 cult rom-com Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na. One would think that Aamir would then be instrumental in roping in his nephew for a cameo. But that wasn’t the case, as revealed by Vir on his X handle on Monday.
Vir shared a screenshot of his online chat with Imran from February 2024. Imran’s text to him reads, “Hey, been hearing good stuff about the film you’re making! Any place I could cameo, you think?” An elated Vir responded, “Are you f**king kidding me???? ABSOLUTELY!!! Let me find something cool. I’ll make sure it’s insane and fun.”

Imran is also slated to make his comeback as a lead actor in Danish Aslam’s romantic drama Adhoore Tum Adhoore Hum, in which he reunites with his Break Ke Baad (2010) director after 16 years. Imran had quit acting in 2015 in order to focus on his mental health. However, an online campaign to bring him back seems to have finally found fruition.
Imran then texted, “Sounds like fun. I’d love to be a part of it,” to which Vir responded, “Done. Let me design something cool and come at you in a few days. If we’re doing something, it’s gotta pop and be funny as f**k.”

Imran and Vir coming together in an Aamir Khan Productions movie is going to be a coup, since they also starred in Abhinay Deo’s 2011 action comedy Delhi Belly 15 years ago. Also, not only Imran, but Aamir also makes a cameo in Happy Patel. In fact, Aamir has also been quite involved in the promotions of the film, the most recent promo being a viral one with him, Vir, and Sunil Grover.

In the video, Grover mimics Aamir and tricks Vir and even Aamir’s security into believing that he’s the real Aamir whereas the real Aamir is an imposter in Sunil Grover. So much so that the security even throws Aamir out of his own office. A behind-the-scenes video doing the rounds online shows Aamir observing Sunil from behind the camera, even giving him suggestions, and then laughing out loud as Sunil tells Vir in signature Aamir Khan style, “You will make me cry too, friend.”

Happy Patel: Khataranak Jasoos also stars Vir Das, Mithila Palkar, Mona Singh, and Sharib Hashmi among others. It's slated to release in cinemas this Friday on January 16.
