Attack on Venezuela: A national emergency has been declared in Venezuela after reports of bombings in capital Caracas emerged early on Saturday. Colombian President Gustavo Petro confirmed the reports of blasts and military activity inside Venezuela and urged that emergency meetings of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the United Nations be convened to address the situation. “Right now they are bombing Caracas. Alert to the whole world, they have attacked Venezuela. They are bombing with missiles,” he said.

Caracas, as per Jerusalem post, described the explosions as “military aggression”. It said the attacks were carried out in the capital as well as the states of Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira. Residents of Caracas reported hearing several explosions in the early hours of Saturday. Power supply was disrupted in the southern parts of the city, close to a key military installation. Witnesses cited by Reuters said aircraft, including planes and helicopters, were heard flying overhead, while a visible plume of smoke rose over parts of the city. Venezuelan daily El Nacional also reported the presence of multiple helicopters in the skies above Caracas during the incidents.

US President Donald Trump has on several occasions spoken of possible ground operations in Venezuela as part of broader efforts to force President Nicolas Maduro from office. These efforts have included tougher sanctions, an increased US military footprint in the region and more than two dozen strikes on vessels accused of involvement in drug trafficking across the Pacific and the Caribbean. However, it is not clear if US was involved in the “bombing” in Caracas on Saturday.
